Staged Heating, also known as Integrated Controls, is an advanced strategy that coordinates multiple heat sources to optimize both comfort and efficiency. Unlike traditional single-stage systems, it dynamically manages heating stages to reduce energy waste and maintain consistent warmth throughout the home.

How Staged Heating Works

First Stage

The first stage uses a ductless heat pump (DHP) or mini split to handle everyday heating needs during milder temperatures. This stage keeps energy consumption low while maintaining consistent warmth.

Second Stage

When outdoor temperatures drop and heating demands rise, the system engages a secondary heat source—typically a boiler or electric baseboard heater—to maintain comfort without overworking the primary unit.

System Type:

Lockout vs. Controller

Leave the existing thermostat(s) in place and lock them out when first stage (DHP(S)) is running OR use the Puck Pro as the only thermostat across both heating systems.

Heating Modes:

Cutover vs. Supplemental

Fully switch from DHP to secondary heat when the DHP isn't as efficient at very cold temperatures OR run both heat sources together, adding extra heating capacity as needed.

Temperature Triggers:

Outdoor vs. Indoor (Droop)

Use weather data to switch between heat sources at set cutover temperatures (outdoor) OR activate secondary heat only when indoor temps drop below the setpoint (indoor/droop).
